Chapter 2: Registration

First Term Overview

In order to prevent hoarding, all CS courses are permit restricted.

Registration Framework

Full-time status requires students to register for 12 credits. In order to work as a GRA or GTA, students must maintain full-time status for the duration of the semester.

• 9 credits must be for a grade (pass-fail, satisfactory-unsatisfactory, or letter grade).

  • A portion may come from program-specific courses; this will be covered in your program-specific orientation.
    • Example: CS PhD students MUST take CS 7001 (5 credits).
    • Example: HCC students MUST take 6451 (3 credits) and 8001 (1 credit).

• 3 or more credits can be for Audit (no grade).

  • Students should register for 3 credits in either CS 8997 (GTA assistantship) or CS 8998 (GRA assistantship) for "audit". These courses are permit restricted, and permits are issued to all currently hired students prior to registration. If you need a permit, reach out to Theresa Nash.

• Every semester you MUST register for research credit, graded satisfactory-unsatisfactory.

  • CS 8999 (Pre-Qualifier): Sat/Unsat, variable credit between 1-12 credits.
  • CS 9000 (Post-Qualifier): Sat/Unsat, variable credit between 1-12 credits.
  • Standard enrollment is 3 credits, but if your advisor wants you to concentrate on research you can take more.

• During IC orientation you will be allowed to register for TWO courses.

  • Program-specific courses (e.g., CS 7001, 6451) count as one course.
  • CS 8903, 8999, and 8001 do not count toward the 2-course limit.

Registration Process

First, speak to your advisor about what you will accomplish this semester, as this is required on the form.

Next, send a permit form that includes (A) a research plan and (B) your advisor's signature via DocuSign.

Registering in OSCAR

1. Obtain a permit as outlined above. IC PhD forms are located here.
2. Register for the course and then set the hours. For example, for CS 8903 Research, you add the credits (add 3 credits): Variable Hours, Registrar's Office, Georgia Tech.

Late Registration

Students can usually make registration changes in the days following the registration deadline by reaching out directly to the Registrar's Office.

If students want to make schedule changes later than this, they must submit a "Petition to the Faculty". The student will complete this form paying special attention to the reason for the request. The student will then route the form through DocuSign first to the IC department academic program manager and then to the registrar. Once the registrar receives the form, they will either approve the request and make the requested changes, or deny the request and provide a reason.

Full-time vs Part-time Enrollment

Full-time Enrollment

Full-time enrollment is defined as:

• Fall and Spring semesters: at least 12 total hours with at least 9 for letter grade or pass/fail.

• Summer: at least 12 total hours with at least 6 for letter grade or pass/fail.

The following students must register on a full-time basis as defined above:

a. graduate research and teaching assistants b. students supported by fellowships, traineeships, or individual grants c. students with out-of-state tuition waivers d. students assigned to the institute by the Armed Forces for the purpose of pursuing a degree e. students on student visas f. graduate co-op students on non-work semesters

Part-time Enrollment

The minimum load for part-time students is 3 credit hours. Students on a visa must reach out to OIE and apply for a reduced course load in order to be approved for part-time enrollment.

Q and A

Q: Do 8903s count against the two courses I can register for?

Answer: No. CS 8903 and CS 8999 do not count toward the 2-course limit, but they can count toward the 9-credit letter grade or pass/fail requirement.

Q: If students have to add 7001, does this count against the 2 courses during registration?

Answer: Yes. CS 7001 counts. It is a 5-credit course.
