Programming Proficiency

In addition, each student must complete a Programming Proficiency requirement. A single class may satisfy both the Programming Proficiency requirement and a Breadth area requirement. The Programming Proficiency requirement must be fulfilled at Georgia Tech and may not be satisfied by transfer credit or advanced standing.

The courses that can satisfy the Programming Proficiency Requirement are:

• CS 6241 Design and Implementation of Compilers

• CS 6290 High-Performance Computer Architecture

• CS 6476 Computer Vision

• CS 7490 Advanced Image Synthesis

• CS 7492 Simulation of Biology

• CS 7637 Knowledge-Based AI

• CS 7643 Deep Learning

• CS 7646 Machine Learning for Trading

• CS 7650 Natural Language

Q: Can I petition to use a course not on the above list to meet my programming proficiency requirement?

Yes, just so this course was taken at Georgia Tech. Courses taken outside of GT cannot meet the programming proficiency requirement.

Process:

1. Prepare a Petition to the Faculty form.
   • Provide a clear rationale as to WHY the course should count
   • You must demonstrate that at least 30% of the grade comes from an instructor-assigned individual programming project
   • Append email from faculty confirming that at least 30% of the grade comes from an instructor-assigned individual programming project
   • Append a syllabus
2. Forward the completed 'Petition to Faculty' to the Academic Program Coordinator of IC (Theresa Nash)
3. Theresa will send the petition to the Graduate Curriculum Committee for consideration. GCC meets once a month. You will be advised once a decision is made.

A "Petition to the Faculty" form may be completed by a student when asking for an exception to an Institute rule or policy. These petitions are reviewed and acted upon by the Graduate Curriculum Committee which meets once a month.
