ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Students

• Take courses, conduct research, are active members of their labs, ambassadors for IC

• Know the IC graduate milestones: https://www.ic.gatech.edu/current/phdreview

• Complete self-evaluations on a timely manner:

  • Fall — third Friday in October: all students
  • Spring — third Friday in March: only first years and students not on "satisfactory status" during the fall review

• Seek out relevant information from their advisor, Associate Chair of Graduate Studies, APC

• Access relevant forms via DOCUSIGN

Faculty Advisors

• Know the students' field of study

• Know the students' skill sets

• Advise students on relevant courses to GTA

• Guide and advise students about how best to meet the graduate milestones

Faculty

• Serve as advisors

• Attend meetings called by the Area Leads

• Participate in graduate related activities

• Participate in qualifying exam, proposal and defense committees

Faculty Area Lead

• Leads research area faculty through the milestones associated with graduate studies, including:

  • Qualifying Exam — Fall term: Identifies second year students, hosts informational sessions

• Hosts recurring meetings (weekly or bi-monthly) to ensure that the research area faculty are involved in critical decisions about graduate activities

IC Academic Administrators

• Assoc. Chair of Grad Affairs — guide students and faculty through the milestones associated with the graduate programs and admissions

  • Adheres to the stated policies; ask Chair for exceptions

• Senior Assoc Chair — provides consultations on edge cases

• Chair — has the final word and can grant exceptions to policies

• Academic Program Manager — manages all logistics and advising on non-academic issues, including Institute policies and procedures regarding program requirements such as qualifying exam, proposal, defense, course waivers, etc.
