The Process

Adding an MS requires that a student be in "good standing", and requires permission from the student's faculty advisor prior to proceeding with MS courses.

Q: Why does this require my advisor's "permission"?

A: Your advisor funds your GRA and completing an MS might require that you take OTHER courses that will take time away from your research.

Q: Why does this require my PhD requirements to be complete?

A: IC PhD funding commitment covers students for 5 years — however, it does not guarantee support for students to get an MS. IC funds students to complete their dissertation work and taking courses to meet the MSCS may take time away from research.

Further, if a student is past their 5th year, IC administration may not support an MS — since the student is beyond their funding commitment.

The Process

If your advisor agrees that you can complete courses toward your MS:

  1. Review the relevant MSCS Program of Study Worksheet: CC Graduate Forms & Procedures
  2. Determine if you have all the courses required to meet the MSCS qualifications
  3. Map out each of the MSCS courses and requirements and indicate how you have met them utilizing a side-by-side spreadsheet
  4. Request your faculty advisor's permission to proceed with the MS and capture this in writing
  5. Complete the 'change of major' form in DocuSign: Change of Major Form
  6. Route to Theresa Nash in IC and Becky Wilson in CS for signatures.
  7. After evaluating your record, Becky Wilson will reach out and advise you on the request.
