Structuralism: Thinking about system and relationship and structures

• approach to linguistics

• Ferdinand de Saussure: knowledge provided by God, and messed up by human

• Edenic Language: a language that can describe things accurately.

  • We don't speak such language because of Tower of Babel.

• signifier: morpheme, sound or written thing

• signified: meaning

There is no fundamental relationship between signifier and signified.

Post-structuralism: philosophical, psychological, theory-based approach.

• Thinking about why structuralism has working our structure. Working out structure is not useful, working out from our experience is not useful either.

• Jacques Derrida: "Structure, Sign, and Play"

  • structure of sign, rather than attaching signifier to signified...
  • we uses a chain of associations in order to arrive to a meaning. there isn't one particular representation of the meaning. (the same idea that we look around the word for the meaning of the word - NLP)
